Why commercial through Evolve

Commercial is where we do our best work

Work or personal use

Work trailers bought through an ABN usually suit a chattel mortgage, with any GST generally claimable if registered. Personal-use trailers suit a secured personal loan.

Deep lender relationships

Lenders differ on a trailer’s age, private sales and custom builds. Deep working relationships with 15 to 20 lenders tell us who fits first.

Dealer, private sale, custom

New from a dealer, used from a private seller or built to order. Used trailers are checked for money owing before the lender pays.

Balloon set honestly

A balloon lowers repayments but costs more overall. We set it against what the trailer will realistically be worth, not the lowest repayment.

In plain terms

Trailer finance, matched to the job

Trailer finance starts with what the trailer is for. A tipper bought through your ABN usually suits a chattel mortgage, a camper or car trailer for weekends is normally a secured personal loan, and a small box trailer may not need finance at all. The structure follows the use, and for a business it shapes the tax treatment too.

The lender matters as much as the structure. Lenders differ on a trailer’s age, private sales, custom builds and minimum loan sizes, and they assess a business on its trading and a household on its income and expenses. We check the fit before any application goes in. Buying the truck or excavator that goes with it? Our heavy vehicle loans cover those, and caravans sit with caravan finance.

Tell us what you are buying, who is selling it and how it will be used. The answer will be straight: possible now, possible with changes, or not yet.

How it works

From first call to towing it home

  • Step

    The recommendation

A 15 to 30 minute call about the trailer, the seller and its use, then loan type, lender and total cost in writing.

  • Step

    Loan application

Once you agree, one application to the lender that fits, with the dealer’s quote or seller’s details and payslips or ABN details.

  • Step

    Lender approval

The lender assesses you and the trailer, and a used one is checked for money owing. You hear the outcome and any conditions plainly.

  • Step

    Approval to settlement

We handle the loan documents and payment to the dealer, seller or builder. Collection then depends on them, not the finance.

Understanding trailer loans

Worth knowing before you sign

Most trailer loans are secured against the trailer itself. The lender pays the dealer or seller, you repay a fixed amount over an agreed term, and the lender’s security is released once the loan is paid off.

Because the trailer is the security, the lender weighs what it is, how old it is and who is selling it, alongside your income and credit history. Matching those details to the right lender first is most of the work.

The loan follows how the trailer will be used. A trailer mainly for work, bought through an ABN, usually suits a chattel mortgage; one mainly for personal use, a secured personal loan assessed on your income and expenses.

With a chattel mortgage the business owns the trailer from day one. If you are GST-registered, the GST on a dealer purchase is generally claimable, as are interest and depreciation for the business-use share. Your accountant confirms the tax side.

Often, yes. Private sales narrow the lender list, and on any used trailer its age and condition carry more weight.

On a private sale the lender identifies the trailer, confirms the seller owns it and pays the seller directly. First it searches the Personal Property Securities Register, the national record of finance owed against goods, and any finance found is usually paid out from the purchase price, so you do not inherit someone else’s loan.

Often, yes, for a trailer used mainly in the business. Several lenders offer low doc asset finance, assessing time trading, credit history and the trailer itself rather than two years of tax returns.

A newer ABN or heavy deductions usually narrow the lender list rather than close it, and owning property or putting in a deposit can widen it again. We tell you which pathway fits before you apply.

Questions trailer buyers actually ask

Finance may be available for a wide range of trailer types, including caravans, camper trailers, flatbed trailers, horse floats, enclosed trailers, boat trailers, car trailers, equipment trailers, and some custom-built trailers. The exact lender appetite depends on the trailer and its intended use.

Eligibility depends on factors such as whether the trailer is for business or personal use, the type and age of the trailer, your income or business strength, existing liabilities, and the lender’s policy.

Yes, in many cases finance may be available for both used trailers and private sale purchases. The available options will depend on the trailer itself and the lender’s policy.

Depending on the scenario, options may include secured loans, unsecured loans, business lending, or personal lending. The right structure depends on the trailer, the borrower, and how the trailer will be used.

Requirements vary by lender and scenario, but common documents may include identification, proof of income, liability information, and details of the trailer being purchased, including invoice or sale information where available.

Terms often run up to around five to seven years, depending on the lender, the trailer type, and the overall structure of the loan.

Sometimes, yes, but it depends on the lender and the loan structure. Early repayment terms can vary, so it is worth understanding this before the facility is put in place.
