In plain terms
How motorbike finance actually works
Motorbike finance looks simple at the dealer’s counter: a price, a weekly repayment and a form to sign. What you actually pay depends on what sits underneath: whether the loan is secured against the bike, how long it runs, whether a balloon is left at the end and which lender reads your file. That is the part we sort out first.
Most road bikes can be used as security, which often costs less than borrowing unsecured, provided the bike meets the lender’s rules on age and registration. Older bikes, some off-road machines and purchases that include riding gear often suit personal loans instead. Riding for work? If the bike is mainly a work tool, vehicle finance for your business may suit better, with the tax side confirmed by your accountant.
Tell us about the bike, the seller and your budget. The answer will be straight: possible now, possible with changes, or not yet.
How it works
From first call to settlement
- Step
The recommendation
A 15 to 30 minute call about the bike and your budget, then a straight answer, with lender, loan type and repayment in writing.
- Step
Loan application
Once you agree, one application to the lender that fits, with a short document list: ID, income evidence and the bike’s details when known.
- Step
Lender approval
The lender assesses you and the bike, or issues a conditional pre-approval if you are still shopping. You hear the outcome and any conditions plainly.
- Step
Approval to settlement
Documents signed, insurance confirmed where needed, and the funds paid to the dealer, the seller or you. Pickup depends on the seller, not the finance.
Understanding motorcycle loans
Three choices that shape your bike loan
Secured or unsecured motorcycle loans: what is the difference?
A secured loan uses the bike as security, so if the loan is not repaid the lender can take the bike and sell it. In return the rate is often lower than on an unsecured loan, which is not tied to the bike at all.
Lenders usually only take a bike as security if it can be registered and is not too old for their policy. The lender then records its claim over the bike on the Personal Property Securities Register. Older bikes, some off-road bikes and purchases that bundle in riding gear often go unsecured instead, with a different set of lenders.
How do balloon payments and loan terms work?
A balloon is a lump sum left owing at the end of the loan, and a longer term spreads the loan over more years. Both lower the regular repayment, and both generally mean more interest over the life of the loan.
Terms usually run up to seven years, though an older bike may be limited to a shorter one. Balloons are less common on motorbikes than on cars, and lenders that offer them often limit them to new or near-new bikes. Bikes can lose value quickly, so check any balloon against what the bike is likely to be worth when it falls due.
Can you finance a motorbike through your business?
Yes, if the bike is used mainly for business rather than private riding. A chattel mortgage is the usual structure: you or your business own the bike from day one, and the lender takes security over it.
If you are registered for GST, the GST on the purchase can usually be claimed, and the interest and depreciation are generally deductible, each to the extent the bike is used for business. Your accountant confirms the tax side; we match the structure and the lender to it.

Questions riders ask before they sign
Can I get finance for a new or used motorbike?
Yes. Finance may be available for both new and used motorbikes or motorcycles, depending on the asset, its age and condition, and the lender’s policy.
Can I buy a motorbike through a dealer or private sale?
In many cases, yes. Some lenders will consider both dealer and private sale purchases, but the available options and requirements can differ depending on how the bike is being purchased.
What do lenders usually look at for motorbike finance?
Lenders will usually look at the type of bike, whether it is new or used, the purchase price, the requested term, your income and liabilities, your credit profile, and whether the overall scenario fits policy.
Is motorbike finance available for business use?
In some cases, yes. Where there is a genuine business use for the motorcycle, a business lending structure may be worth considering depending on the borrower and lender fit.
What documents are usually needed for motorbike finance?
Requirements vary, but lenders will commonly ask for identification, proof of income, details of liabilities, and information about the motorbike being purchased, such as a tax invoice or sale details.
How long does motorbike finance approval usually take?
Timeframes can vary depending on the lender, the quality of the application, and the asset being purchased. Cleaner applications with the right lender fit usually move more smoothly than poorly matched or incomplete submissions.
What can make motorbike finance harder to get approved?
Common issues include poor lender fit, weak credit, unstable income, policy restrictions around the type or age of the motorcycle, and applications that are poorly structured from the outset.
